Bret Gilliam met Jonathan Edwards back in February 1975 in the Virgin Islands where Jon was doing a concert series and was introduced to Bret for scuba diving lessons. They have now been friends for almost 35 years.
Gilliam has had a nearly 40-year career in professional diving, logging over 18,000 dives in military, commercial, scientific, filming, and technical diving operations. He is one of the diving industry's most successful entrepreneurs with investments in publishing, training agencies (TDI/SDI), manufacturing, resorts, dive vessels, cruise ships, and film production companies. The aggregate sale value of his companies totaled over $80 million when he retired in 2005 at the age of 54. Author of over 900 articles and principal author or contributor to 44 books, his writing and photography has been published worldwide. His magazines included Scuba Times, Deep Tech Journal, Fathoms, as well as serving as senior editor to others internationally.
He also has done concert photography for other musical artists including Waylon Jennings, the Rolling Stones, David Mallett, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Wheatfield, Dan Fogelberg, Paul McCartney, and many others including model/actress Lauren Hutton. His work has appeared in magazines such as National Geographic, Outside, Time, Life, Newsweek, Geo, Vogue, Wired, Rolling Stone, New York, Virgin Islander, Islands, Robb Report, Playboy, etc.
After nearly 25 years living in the Caribbean and equatorial regions worldwide, he now lives in Maine where he divides his time between three homes and a motor yacht. Jonathan is a frequent house-guest in Maine and they share overlapping friends in the music industry. - albums: 10
